Background Information
Edward Curtis (1868-1952) was an American ethnologist and photographer of the American West and Native American people. His black and white photograph features an Iñupiat Inuit family from a traditional hunter-gatherer culture in Northern Alaska.
From 1907 to 1930, Curtis created a multi-volume series of over 1500 photographs, the North American Indian Portfolio. Considered a comprehensive work on Native American Indians, and “a landmark in the history of photography.”
